Mold requires three things to grow into an infestation within a dwelling: moisture, a high enough humidity level, and a food source. The food source can be nearly anything that is organic or is not metallic.

Dust is typically formed from dead skin cells and other debris that aggregates in a property overtime. Homes with pets tend to see more dust than homes without them. Dust aggregates on any surface in the home that it can, including the floor, furniture, and even bedding and rugs if not vacuumed often.

Dust is a great source of food for mold and can contribute to its rapid growth if left unchecked for long periods of time. Dust not tended to can help a mold infestation become progressively worse in a short period of time. Dust left on wooden furniture without a protective coating or painted can assist the mold in getting into the wood grains faster.

DES has seen a correlation in its mold remediation projects with the aggregation of dust in a property and the magnitude of the spread of mold through the property.

Simply dusting a few times a month and ensuring that there is adequate dusting of all areas along with regular vacuuming can reduce the ability of mold to spread and remove mold from a property.

Saint Louis, make sure you are not neglecting your dusting and vacuuming in your homes, offices, and other properties. It may help assist mold in its establishment and growth in your properties if you do.
