The picture above is from a mold remediation job Disaster Emergency Services (“DES”) did for a client in Kirkwood, MO.
DES has been asked by several of its clients and partners throughout the Saint Louis, Missouri area why the need for containing the mold infected area during the remediation process. Like any field, people become “experts” overtime and through learning and experience. The same is true with understanding mold and mold remediation.
When DES develops a plan for mold remediation, it involves the physical removal of any existing mold and afterwards effectively sanitizing a property utilizing HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial solutions.
During the process of removing the mold, which typically means disturbing the contents of a room and cutting into walls, mold spores are kicked up even more and if not properly contained, have the potential to spread to new areas of the property and make the mold infestation problem even worse.
DES runs air scrubbers to capture as much mold as possible in a contaminated area but having the area contained using thick plastic ensures the spread of the mold spores is severely retarded and limited in its ability to spread.
Depending on the situation, DES may run negative air pressure through an air scrubber to collect any additional old traveling through the air ducts. DES is very likely going to seal off air ducts in the infected areas as well.
So, while setting up a containment barrier costs more money and time, it is done for a very valid reason – to prevent further contamination of mold and therefore limit future damage to other areas of a property.
