Throughout the St. Louis, Missouri area and including Metro East in Illinois, the Saint Louis region is an excellent breeding ground for mold indoors if building systems are not maintained and/or a freak accident results in water damage.
Not only does the St. Louis region have very high humidity levels in the summer and often in the spring and the fall, it also has a lot of annual rainfall relative to other areas and it has violent storms that can cause damage to roofs and other building systems meant to keep moisture out of a building.
Mold fears for St. Louis residents are not illogical, but let’s point out the most common signs of a mold issue in a building.
Most Common Signs of Mold in a Building
- Visible moisture present around the suspected area. Visible moisture in a suspected area is always a good indication of mold being present. Mold requires moisture of some sort to grow and it can be either liquid water or humidity at high enough levels. If moisture is present on drywall, for example, one can expect mold to eventually form.
- Discoloration, colored spots, or surfaces on drywall or other areas. While there are numerous types of molds, they are almost always distinctive in their look against surfaces they are growing on. Molds tend to appear as groups or webs of spores with a unique color and they change the natural appearance of drywall, wood, flooring, or anything else they grow on.
- Musty smell in suspected area. Musty smells or smells like an old sock or wet clothes tend to indicate the presence of mold in abundance. Mold releases waste and byproducts of its metabolism into the air so this smell is indicative of a mold problem. You may not be able to see the mold problem as its behind a wall or other cavity, but the “mold smell” is a good indicator that you have a problem.
- Degradation of structural building materials. If it appears that drywall, wood, floorboards, studs, flooring, or other organic materials are soft, or becoming soft, and mushy, there is a good chance that mold may be the culprit. Mold eats organic materials and breaks down their structure and strength, leading to degradation of the materials. Overtime, this could lead to walls and floorboards not standing up to their use and health and safety issues.
What St. Louisans Should Do If They Suspect a Mold Infestation
The best thing folks in the Saint Louis area can do if they suspect a mold infestation is to have a building examined by a professional mold inspector. Mold inspectors can determine the source of the problem as well as the extent of it and make recommendations about its remediation. It is important to hire mold inspectors and remediators who have certifications, training, and experience.
