The St. Louis, MO area has seen six major floods since 2008, including two record-setting floods in the last three years. The First National Flood Risk Assessment (FNFRA) in 2020 estimated that there are 13,149 properties at risk of flooding in the St. Louis area. Many St. Louisans, having seen decades of flooding in the St. Louis area after flash flooding and historic rains, wonder if they are at risk for flooding in their basements or homes. St. Louis has a topography with lots of rivers and low lying flood plains combined with a sewer and drainage system that is far from adequate to service the area in a time period of rapid rainfall. In addition, many developers, through election fraud and political corruption schemes, have built in flood plains and have not been protected by the officials whose job it was to prevent this abuse.
The sad reality is many St. Louisans who sit in low lying parts of the region may be victims of flooding. Flooding of basements and homes has occurred in St. Charles, Imperial, Kirkwood, Chesterfield, and the Central West End in the City of St. Louis. Those least susceptible to flooding are those not living close to any waterways, including even that tiny creek that you’d never suspect, and those who live at higher elevations in their neighborhood. During flash floods, even those at the highest elevations have the potential to see their basements flood if water is not able to flow away from the home quickly enough or the water table is overloaded.
Flooding is most common in the upper River Des Peres, along the Mississippi, the Missouri, and the Meramec Rivers and around creeks and waterways that feed into these major rivers as they become backed up in major rain storms. That being said, as mentioned above, nearly any property has the potential to face flooding in aggressive rain storms where the water table is overwhelmed and/or the water flowing away from the house has nowhere to go.
