It’s extremely common in the Saint Louis Metropolitan region to hear about someone who discovered mold in their building. Whether it’s a single family home, garage, apartment complex, or an industrial, retail, or office building, mold being found in the Saint Louis, Missouri area happens all the time.
While some folks in the St. Louis area may think it’s the location of the home that affects the mold, all homes in the St. Louis area are at risk for mold infestations. That means your home or business building can see mold growth whether you are in Kirkwood, Fenton, Clayton, Ladue, Berkeley, Arnold, or St. Louis City – it’s not a location based problem, generally speaking.
Mold is prevalent in the Saint Louis area because the region naturally has in abundance two of the primary drivers for mold growth: humidity and high temperatures. In addition, there is an abundance of water in the St. Louis area which can help the mold growth process along if it ends up in the places needed for mold growth.
Humidity typically needs to be greater than 55% to see mold growth, with more rapid growth expected at humidity levels greater than 65%. The St. Louis area has more months with this level of humidity than those without throughout the year. If proper air conditioning is not being utilized indoors, mold growth is likely with high humidity levels.
High temperatures help fuel mold growth and as all Saint Louisans are aware, our summers are extremely hot and we may even have spring, summer, and winter temperatures that get relatively warm as well. These high temperatures help heat things up and if water is involved, as is prevalent in great abundance in the St. Louis region, humidity levels typically rise, further encouraging mold growth.
Some great ways to keep mold from forming inside your properties is to run dehumidifiers and/or air conditioning to remove the moisture and lower the humidity of the air. Once mold starts, especially if it is behind the walls, it’s only a matter of time until serious human health issues and the deterioration of your property are material concerns to the owners or operators of the property.
